Donald Joseph Romano’s Most Fun Vacation as a Child By: Leo Romano

Where would parents with seven kids travel? To find this out, I recently sat down with Donald Joseph Romano Jr., a Chicago resident who goes by D.J. I went a little deep and asked him which was his favorite place to travel growing up!

Donald Joseph Romano Jr. was born in Elmhurst and raised in River Forest with his six siblings. When asked how often he and his family traveled, he responded, “Every other year or maybe.” He and his family went to Florida, Boston, Kentucky, Dallas, and Acapulco. His favorite trip was the Dallas-Acapulco trip 20 days after his tenth birthday.

The whole family arrived in Dallas on December 30th, 1977, where they would ring in the new year and go to football games. The following day, they went to the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game. He said that game was very exciting, but the Notre Dame game the next day was even better. Notre Dame was in the Cotton Bowl on January 1st, 1978. He enjoyed this game very much, because he is a huge Notre Dame fan like myself. Following the game, they flew to Acapulco. There, they had many dinners with pineapples. This was a very juicy memory because he never really thought of eating pineapples for dinner.

Overall, he said, “it was a very nice trip!” He also told me, “the weather was very nice!” When asked if he would ever go to Dallas and Acapulco again with his wife and kids, he said, “I would love to take my family there,” and followed that by saying, “it was fun!” He looks forward to going to Acapulco again.
