The Big Game

PROLOGUE

ON THE FIELD… I started to warm up by playing catch with Clem. We finished warming up and headed into the dugout. We waited in the shade till Coach D.J. said,”Let's take the field.” Then coach D.J. gave us a pep talk that went a little like this,”We came here to win. We are in fourth place. Let's prove them wrong. We are the best team here. Let's show them what kind of team they are and let's win this thing.” Then we put our hands in the middle, and after that Coach D.J. said,”Mitch, you say Generals on three!” So I did, and I said it loud and proud and led the team on the field to warm up!

THE BIG GAME

Before we enter the big game we relax in the shade and eat pizza. We
start to stretch. I lead us. I say,"Bring your right arm to your left foot for ten
seconds then switch." We all stretch then we walk back in the shade and
talk about the big game. We listen to the legendary Coach D.J.'s pep talk.
After that we walk into the stadium. We hear fans scream as loud as a
lion's roar. We head into the dugout. We put our hands in the middle as we place the helmets on our heads.

Dune starts off with a leadoff single on the first pitch, but then Clem
strikes out. Emmet walks, and Leo hits a bomb over the scared third
basemen's head with one out in the first inning, and Dune runs home
excitedly. Aidan grounds out to short but drives in a run. I step up to
the plate with the bases loaded but couldn't do
anything. Three outs!

We start practicing before the bottom of the first starts. First batter for
Welles singles, the second batter strikes out on a check swing. The third
strikes out lookin' and the risk batter scores. Then their next batter groundsout to me, the sixth batter strikes out. Three outs. We are up to bat again.

OUR TURN TO STRIKE BACK

We maintain the lead 2-1. They hold us, but our defense is rock solid. In
the third inning, we score 3, but they score 2. We still have the lead 5-3
though. They let up one, but us none. Then Danny Johnson comes from
Nebraska to help us out in the fifth and sixth. Danny is on the mound.
CRACK! One batter kills a ball! Thank God Emmett is there! NO!
Emmett! Catch the ball! It's ok, we are still winning. Next batter BING!
It is crushed! Come on Hunter! NO! Not another error! It's ok! We are
still up one! Finally we get the third out! Calm Down Mitch!

INSURANCE RUNS

Then Coach D.J. says,"Don't you dare lose this game." We all say yes
coach, and get ready to crank some baseballs. As I put on my helmet
on I whisper to myself,"We will not lose this game." Then right fielder
Quinn Smith starts off the inning being hit by a pitch. Dillon Romano
is up to bat while Quinn Smith steals second and third. Now Dillon
bunts a perfect bunt right down the third base line. Hustling is Dillon.
Third base with the throw. Way over the first basemen's head. Dillon
starts to put his head down and run. He hits first, second, then third.
Coach D.J. Yells,"Stop." Dillon isn't listening, he decides to go home.
The ump yells,"Safe." Loud cheers roar from the fans, then they quiet down
and Welles makes three outs and the inning is over.

THE LAST INNING

Danny on the mound looking determined. Strike 3 swinging. Strike 3
lookin'. One more out to win. Fans on their feet. Oh no! Single! We can still win though. Fans on their feet once again. He makes contact flying high to
shortstop as Marco snags it! We win! We go crazy! I yell,"We did it!"
Now we run into our dugout and we decide to pour our Gatorade bucket
on Coach D.J.. He is laughing so hard. We run to the mound for a
dogpile. After that we shake hands with the other team. We all stand
respectfully and clap as the coaches hand their lil' losers their medals.
Welles players' faces are so wet now. Time for us to receive our large
trophies that say:
                                   2016 Northside 5 Champions

Coach D.J. will present them to us. I am going to receive the trophy first. I walk up to Coach D.J. with pride and a never-ending smile. He says,
"Aren't you glad you played?" And I say,"Yes, yes I am! Thanks!" Then
everyone else takes their trophy. I accepted two! One for the best player all
around award! Then we gather for our last huddle. The Generals all left
happy, Welles not so much!
